Agricultural farming was the main occupation of the vast majority of the Bhutanese in the past and still continues to be the occupation of most of the rural population. People grew a diverse ranges of crops including cereals, tubers, vegetables and fruits. Sweet and bitter buckwheats, white and black barleys, wheat and mustard are the main crops grown in the highlands and rice, maize and millet are grown in the midlands and lowlands. Vegetables include potato, chilly, radish, turnip, pumpkin, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower, beans, peas, tomato, cucumber and asparagus. Bhutanese have traditional systems of soil management, rotation cropping, tilling and weeding methods and cycles, irrigation and shared cropping practices.
