Scent Offering

The Bhutanese believe that the spirit or consciounsess of a deceased person and other beings who are roaming without a real corporeal form can only survive on smell. Thus, in the morning and evenings, families often offer smell to such spirits by burning flour mixed with butter and sugar on ember. At the time of a person's death, the smell offering is made constantly. There are vegetarian smell offerings which are used for all sentient beings and for the spirit of the deceased and non-vegetarian ones for the harmful spirits. The liturgies written for making this offering are often read out when the smell is produced.
