Migration
Many Bhutanese families in central valleys had two homes. They would travel from their summer home to their winter home at a lower altitude in winter and return to the summer home in spring. They would take with them their main belongings and livestock. Such families had land in both areas and may keep one of the servants working in the fields when they the family leaves. In central Bhutan, where the entire family did not move, their herd of cattle migrated with a cowherder to warmer regions. Such movements start with rituals for safe journey and preparations for the journey as well as for the care of the house being left behind. Many migrating families kept things in both places and many villages in both places bear the same name.
