Mediation
With no formal legal services easily accessible to them, the Bhutanese communities in the past practised internal mediation and reconciliation within the communities to address grievances and resolve disputes. Village elders acted as mediators and juries without a legal contract or obligations. Agreements would be drawn between the disputing parties after hearing the stories from both parties and negotiating between the two to come to mutually acceptable conclusion. After exhausting this option of nangdrig or internal reconciliation, a case is taken to a state court to be adjudicated by an official judge or court. The village elders use persausive language and art of negotiation in carrying out the process of mediation and reconciliation.
