Meteorological Knowledge

Bhutanese farmers interpret the natural phenomena and signs to predict the weather and meteorological conditions. They read the clouds in the sky, the direction of wind or the movement of birds to tell prospective weather patterns and the movement of the sun, moon and stars to know the seasonal changes. They also have beliefs of human causes of inclement weather such as abusing the sanctuary of territorial deities and having quarrels which upsets the local gods. In the case of impending inclement weather, they also undertake rituals to avert it.
