Gandi Bell
This is a large piece of hard wood used as bell in the monastic centres. The wood has specific designs and it is hit with a smaller piece of wood to make the sound. Although it is considered a bell to warn the monks, it does not any longer serve the practical purpose of signalling the monks. Bronze gongs and bells are used for that purpose. The wooden ganḍi is used for monastic rituals of confession during full moon and new moon days and during summer retreat. There are different number and styles of strokes to be hit in accordance with the occasion and event.
