The Connective ཡང་
This connective means “also.” In Spoken Tibetan, ཡང་ is pronounced ཡའི་. In Literary Tibetan, this connective has three possible forms, depending on the last letter of the preceding syllable.
- ཡང་ is used after the consonants ང་ ན་ མ་ ར་ ལ་
- ཀྱང་ is used after the consonants ག་ ད་ བ་ ས་ and the ད་དྲག་
- འང་ / ཡང་ are used after vowels and འ་
It also appears in the expression ཡིན་ན་ཡང་, meaning “but” or “nevertheless”; this is pronounced ཡིན་ནའི་ in Spoken Tibetan.
