The Dual Demonstrative

The use of the dual demonstrative is preferred over the use of the numeral ‘two’ along with a singular or plural demonstrative. The last two examples are thus incorrect:

  • གཡག་ནག་པོ་ཆེན་པོ་དེ་གཉིས་ “These two black yaks”
  • *གཡག་ནག་པོ་ཆེན་པོ་གཉིས་དེ་ (Incorrect)
  • *གཡག་ནག་པོ་ཆེན་པོ་གཉིས་དེ་ཚོ་ (Incorrect)

However, it is possible to use both the numeral “two” and the dual demonstrative:

  • གཡག་ནག་པོ་ཆེན་པོ་གཉིས་དེ་གཉིས་ “Those two big black yaks”
  • The Dual Demonstrative (English, Latin script, Original)
