One of the chief purposes of divination is “diagnosis”: to determine the cause of a particular problem, loss, illness – for example, to determine whether the obstacle being encountered is due to a spirit, and if so, what kind of spirit. Divination can also yield information concerning the types of rituals that should be performed to counteract the problem.
