The primary motor cortex has a somatotopic map that allows different muscles to be represented by different areas of the cortex. It consists of six layers with the fifth layer being the most packed due to the importance in descending output. Instead of controlling single muscles, the primary motor cortex is responsible for whole muscle groups.
