Uncus

The uncus is the hook structure that is part of the parahippocampal gyrus of the temporal lobe. An uncal herniation is caused by the uncus pressing against the oculomotor nerve causing an increase in intracranial pressure with the worst cases resulting in coma or death. A preliminary symptom of uncal herniation is ipsilateral pupil dilation.
