Subthalamic nucleus
The subthalamic nucleus is a part of the basal ganglia and releases the excitatory neurotransmitter, glutamate. It receives input from the globus pallidus, cortex, substantia nigra and reticular formation. The subthalamic nucleus neurons project to the globus pallidus and substantia nigra. It is inhibited by globus pallidus externa neurons that release GABA. Disinhibition of the subthalamic nucleus leads to movement disorders such as Parkinson’s. Therefore, the subthalamic nucleus is a target for deep brain stimulation for dyskinesia patients.
