The cortical and basomedial nuclei of the amygdala form a circuit involved in processing olfactory, gustatory, and visceral information. The cortical nucleus is further involved with processing pheromonal information and ingestive, defensive, and reproductive behavior. The basomedial nucleus is involved with top-down control of anxiety and fear.
