Ventral lateral nucleus

The ventral lateral nucleus receives inputs from the cerebellum, striatum, and cortex and projects to the primary motor cortex. It serves as a central integrative center for motor control. There are two subnuclei including the anterior and posterior. The anterior is the relay nucleus to the basal ganglia, receives input from the globus pallidus internal segment, and sends output to the supplementary motor area. The posterior is the relay nucleus to the cerebellum and receives input from the cerebellum of the opposite brain hemisphere via the superior cerebellar peduncle. Output goes to the primary motor and premotor cortices.
