Bamboo Architecture

Small bamboo structures are common in all parts of Bhutan. People build fences, sheds, small storage structures and enclosures for animals out of bamboo. Many Bhutanese houses also have attic, terrances and terrace walls made out of bamboo. Ekra walls made of bamboo plastered with mud is widely used for walls and partitioning in the houses. In south-central part of Bhutan, bamboo architecture known as bachim is popularly. These houses with stilts are built mostly out of bamboo and is considered very suitable for the prevailing climatic conditions. The bamboo walls are made of sliced bamboos in a number of intricate patterns.
