Bhutan does not have a very rich calligraphical tradition and calligraphy is not among the thirteen well known arts and crafts of Bhutan. However, it is not rare to see beautifully crafted texts and inscriptions in Bhutan. The manuscripts in Bhutan were mostly written in very fine Uchen script. Even today, Bhutanese take pride in their style of Uchen script. Many manuscripts were also created in Ume scripts in the past but this has now almost totally stopped. Ornamental Lantsha script is widely used for decorative calligraphy on prayer wheels or temple walls. The Joyig script, which is claimed to be Bhutan's national script, is popularly used today.
