Moving Ceremony

Bhutanese observe special rituals for moving or relocation. When a house or a monument is being built, people often conduct a pochoe ritual for relocation. In the case of renovating a sacred object, the sacred essence of the objects, i.e. the spiritual force which resides in it, is temporarily moved to a different object until it is time to be resettled in the new or renovated object. People also hold a ritual when they move houses or when the old one is being demolished and rebuilt. There are also rituals for people when they move their residence such as leaving the summer home for the winter base. Rituals known as lamchoe are conducted for smooth passage and safe journeys.
