Carving

The tradition of carving on wood and stone are well known in Bhutan although carving on wood is far more popular than stone carving. Given the abundance of wood of many varieties, Bhutanese have developed a rich culture of carving statues, ritual objects, prayers, books, motifs and moulds on wood. Besides, the techonology of wood-turning is used for making wooden utensils including plates, cups, lables, jugs and other household items. Stone carving has declined today although one can find a great number of stone and slate carving on religious monuments across the country.
